Description
Uppingham School is looking for an experienced teacher with excellent leadership skills to play a key role in the smooth running of our newly established Lower School.
In September 2025, Uppingham will introduce a Lower School House for Year 7 and Year 8 pupils, joining our existing provision of fourteen boarding houses and one day house. As Head of the Lower School, you will oversee the operational management of the House, providing a stimulating and engaging environment to ensure our first cohort of 11+ entry candidates are well supported during their first years of secondary education.
To achieve this, you will oversee a range of areas including safeguarding, regulatory compliance and pastoral care. This will involve:
- Ensuring that lower school pupils’ academic development is monitored and supported, such that all children make strong progress
- Providing staff and pupils with a clear statement of their roles and responsibilities within the lower school, including policies and procedures for child safeguarding
- Instilling a safeguarding culture within the lower school to ensure a safe and fully compliant environment
- Assuming responsibility for Fire Safety and Health and Safety in the Lower School
- Line managing the Team of Lower School Staff
- Ensuring the highest standards of pupil behaviour, welfare and care
Your role will be key to the orderly and effective management of the Lower School, providing excellent educational opportunities, whilst supporting the next generation of Uppinghamians.
About you
You will be an experienced teacher, with a track record of excellent teaching at senior school level, expert classroom management skills and the ability to form a strong rapport with pupils. You will also need previous pastoral experience, as well as excellent leadership, communication and team management skills.

NB: There is no accommodation with this role, as the Head of Lower School is not a ‘live-in’ position.
