Description

This is an exciting opportunity to be at heart of boarding life at Uppingham School, where your pastoral judgement, steady presence and commitment to young people will help shape a safe, happy and purposeful home-from-home for pupils.

As an Assistant Housemaster / Housemistress at Uppingham School, you will be closely involved in the daily rhythm of the house, working alongside the Housemaster or Housemistress, matrons, tutors, health centre staff and parents to keep the house running smoothly.

You will play a key role in the life of the boarding house, working closely with pupils as they move through the everyday routines of school life, providing a steady pastoral presence that helps each pupil feel noticed, understood and cared for. This will include helping new pupils settle and supporting them through moments of challenge, encouraging good habits around study, sleep, wellbeing and relationships.

Alongside close pupil-facing work, you will help lead the practical running of a busy residential community. This will mean supporting house routines, liaising with parents, tutors, matrons and the Health Centre, responding calmly to welfare or safeguarding concerns, and helping ensure evenings, weekends and key transitions run smoothly. As a House Tutor, you will also guide pupils’ academic and personal development, while deputising for the Housemaster or Housemistress when needed and helping maintain the high standards expected of boarding life at Uppingham.

About you

You will need experience of pastoral care within a boarding, residential or school setting, together with a sound understanding of safeguarding, pupil welfare and the needs of adolescents. Ideally, you will have worked as a tutor, mentor or pastoral practitioner and be confident building trusted relationships with young people, supporting them through challenges and helping them develop good habits, confidence and independence.

You will also need the judgement, organisation and resilience to help run a busy boarding house day to day. This means communicating clearly with pupils, parents and colleagues; keeping accurate records; responding calmly under pressure; and working closely with matrons, tutors, health centre staff and senior leaders. A First Aid qualification is helpful, or a willingness to undertake one, but most important is a warm, professional and highly dependable approach to residential pastoral care.
