Description

The role

Are you a well-qualified graduate looking to kickstart your career in teaching? Uppingham School, one of the UK’s leading independent schools, is seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual to train as a Teacher of Philosophy & Theology from September 2025.

This is an exceptional opportunity to gain first-hand classroom experience while completing a fully funded PGCE from the University of Buckingham. During your training year, you will teach a suitably reduced timetable with full responsibility for your own classes, whilst receiving guidance and advice from an experienced mentor. There will also be opportunities to undertake teaching placements in a different school setting.

Uppingham offers an exceptionally varied co-curricular programme with a wide range of sports and activities on offer. As a key member of our teaching team, you will also be expected to play a full part in the life of this seven-day week boarding school, by taking on additional co-curricular responsibilities in addition to teaching.

About you

We are looking for a strong, dynamic character, with excellent subject knowledge, a good degree and the ability to establish an appropriate rapport with pupils. Strong communication skills as well as the ability to work effectively as part of a team is essential. You will also have high personal and professional standards, with well-developed pastoral instincts.

The Philosophy & Theology Department

Teaching in the Philosophy & Theology Department is delivered by an experienced team of six specialist colleagues. We are housed in a suite of classrooms in Windmill House, a building in the centre of the School campus which was converted for the purpose in 2010 and refurbished in 2023. There are five classrooms, a department office and a library which is a popular venue for Sixth Form study. The department has a strong tradition of activities outside the classroom, with seminars, discussion groups, visiting speakers and trips all contributing to the pupils’ experience of the subject.

What we offer:

When you join us, you become part of a community that appreciates and supports its team members. You will enjoy a range of benefits that reflects our appreciation:

  • 50% Contribution towards premiums for the School’s private health scheme
  • Discount on School fees
  • Discount at a local nursery in Uppingham
